The Notebook ObjectivesUAB Best robotics rules requires all teams to submit both a Robot and the Notebook to participate in the contest. To compete beyond the local area and advance to a regional competition, teams must commit to completing two additional components; the marketing plan and an oral presentation. In 2014 The POP BOTS elected to compete locally, but: 2015 brought new members and the desire to do more. The 2015 POP Robotics team " Magnetite Knights" will compete in 5 categories - robot - notebook - exhibit - presentation - spirit and sportsmanship.
What is Required? Required (7) elements of the Notebook (specifically, a 3" binder) are described below. The UAB Best Official Notebook Requirements document is attached at the bottom of this page. The Notebook includes: 1. Research paper about the contest theme (see details below) 2. Meeting minutes 3. Record of Safety for all gatherings 4. Documentation of the following processes: Use of Engineering Design Process. This will be included in the minutes template used during each meeting. Engineering Design Process |
Engineering Design Process Students learn about thinking through situations and problems using a systematic process. Although the process is applied to the topic of robotics, it is clear to see the advantages of learning this "troubleshooting" strategy at an early age. To build the robot, members began by 1. Stating the problem (what the robot had to do), 2.Generating Ideas: students learned to brain storm through drawing pictures of robot designs and making decisions about the best design options for the required tasks. Next, students 3. Select a Solution by narrowing design ideas to those that can be constructed with the parts available. 4 Build the Item occurs in parts, as the team break into small groups to tackle constructing different parts of the robot simultaneously, including programming the motors. 5. Evaluation is the process of testing each section to determine its success in meeting the requirements, then bring the parts together and retesting. Documentation includes trial and error attempts, charting what worked and did not work and analyzing WHY, and keeping track of changes made during the testing process. 6. Present Results includes demonstrating performance attempts based on course requirements, such as driving through a mock course. Documentation of safety efforts is integrated into each step of the Engineering Design Process. |
5. Notebook (binder) must have a cover identifying the School, team name, Teacher Contact, and team Number
6. Notebook body must contain: title page (just like cover), Table of Contents,
7. Up to 30 pages typed, 12 pt font, times new roman type style, 1 inch margins, single - sided pages (not including title page table of contents) containing the following:
a. Description of the process used to design and complete the robot,
b. Research paper (2-5 pages),
c. Documentation of safety procedures,
d. Supplemental appendix up to 20 sheets, front and back are allowed,
e. Research paper up to 5 typed pages
Research Paper
The paper is a required element in the notebook. The purpose is to demonstrate the the team understands the real world correlation between the course and an actual playing field. Content can include information describing the game theme and history, famous inventors, major milestones, and science and technology related to the game theme. The paper must be properly written with sources cited.
A total of 30 points can be earned for successfully completing the notebook. Below is an example of the requirements from 2014.
